During holy week, many of us Filipinos especially Dabawenyos has the habit of having Binignit or Biko as part of the annual tradition, but what makes this dish a qualifying substitute for our meals is still a mystery. Holy week is a time for us to repent for our sins, a time for us to remember Jesus Christ’s love for us, a time to change or correct our mistakes, and a time for sacrifice and fasting.

We Filipinos express our sacrifice thru fasting and we abstain from things that we want and usually do. On form of fasting in Philippine tradition is “no eating of meat”.

Many of us really love meat, so as a form of sacrifice, avoiding from eating meat and other food that we love during these days has form part of our tradition. In lieu of meat, we make Biko or Binignit instead.
