With the cabinet committee meeting last June 1, 2017, the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) had approved the Mindanao Railway project for Tagum-Davao-Digos segment as proposed by the Department of Transportation.
This project will be locally financed and will have an estimated cost of P35.26 billion. I has been projected to begin in the first quarter of 2018 and will finish on the 3rd quarter of 2022.
The construction will still cover only the phase 1 of the project, which involves a 102.28-kilometer commuter railway that will run from Tagum City, Davao del Norte, to Digos City, Davao del Sur, with 7 stations, one terminal in Davao City, and one depot in Tagum City.
Afterwards, the construction of the next phase shall be expected.
The railway generally will connect major cities of Cagayan de Oro, Iligan, Zamboanga, Butuan, Surigao, General Santos and Davao
The Mindanao Railway project has been foreseen by many to ease out the transportation problem in Mindanao. In fact, in the campaign of President Rodrigo Duterte, he highlighted this project as one of the major proposals he would deliver as a priority in his to-do-list.
